Your child’s baptism at St. oswald’s ChurchWelcomeAs a church we welcome everyone who wishes to have their child baptised in St Oswald’s, Grasmere. Baptism is an important step in anyone’s life, and as a Church we would wish to support you and your child in being christened and baptised.
Those baptised as infants are of course often too young to remember the service as they grow up and therefore as a Church we seek to include your child as they grow, and we will invite to special occasions in the Church’s Year as you child joins our cradle roll.
We are pleased to welcome you and your child to Grasmere Church and hope that through the service and the years ahead we can support you and your child.
Please read the information below and if you would like to talk about arranging a service please contact me via the response form on this website.
Cameron Butland Rector of Grasmere
What do we need to do?Those baptised are beginning a journey in faith, therefore it is right to ask where is the best place to start this journey? Whilst we welcome all in this Church, those baptised are normally from the immediate area in order to be nutured by the Church in Grasmere, however it is best to contact us first before making any arrangements. When you contact us please think about possible dates and times and we will be happy to discuss with you whether baptism at Grasmere is the best option. All enquiries are welcome.
How much does it cost?Nothing, by being baptised a person becomes a member of the Church and we believe that this is a free gift, no charge is therefore made.
Who can be a godparent?Anyone who you feel will be supportive of the Christian upbringing of your child. You can have as many or as few Godparents as you wish. Please can you write the names of the Godparents opposite, I do not need their full name, just their usual first and surnames.
We will receive a certificate?Everyone baptised receives a certificate of baptism signed by the person who has taken the service. All baptisms are also registered and recorded, current records being held at the Church and old records at the County Record Office in Kendal.
How can I help my child learn more?We have regular Children’s services and all those baptised will receive an invitation to these special occasions. In addition your child could attend our Church School to begin their education in a Christian environment and Grasmere School welcomes all enquiries, 015394 35313.
